"What do you want to be when you grow up?" I specifically remember my dad asking me that question when we were standing in line at Evertte's grocery store in Goshen, IN. And I remember pointing to a display for Wrigley Doublemint gum and saying, "That's what I want to do."
I wanted to be a commercial artist and I honestly don't remember a time when I didn't know that's what I wanted to do. Because, ever since I could hold a pencil I was drawing. I would draw cars, buildings, trees, whatever I could. So I set my sights on being an illustrator. And when I got to college, I chose Graphic Design as my major, but fully intended to be an illustrator. At least until about half way through my first illustration class. My teacher, Mr. Brookes, was very realistic in his description of what it takes to be a profitable illustrator. That was the day I fully embraced the world of design.
I mean no disrepect to astronauts. I'll be the first one to tell you that design is not rocket science. But I'm glad I've been able to work in a field that's in line with my passion. There are days that I can't believe people pay me to do what I do. Don't get me wrong, there are also days that I feel like they can't pay me enough to do what they're asking me to do. But I just can't imagine doing anything else.
